70th Anniversary: Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

The Regal Cinema’s Classic Film Series presents director Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause. Tickets are just £6.

This iconic coming-of-age, romantic drama starring 1950s heart throb James Dean, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. It seems only fitting to bring it back to the big screen!

Remarkably, James Dean became one of the most influential figures in Hollywood in the 1950s, despite a career that lasted only five years. His impact on cinema and popular culture was profound, even though he appeared in just three major films.

After moving to a new town, troublesome teen Jim Stark (James Dean) is supposed to have a clean slate, but being the new kid in town comes with it’s own set of problems.

While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a somewhat disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl named Judy (Natalie Wood).

However, unluckily for Stark, Judy is the girlfriend of neighborhood tough guy, Buzz (Corey Allen). When Buzz violently confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the new kid’s troubles really begin.

Rebel Without a Cause received three Oscar nominations, two BAFTA award nominations and won a Golden Globe award for Most Promising (female) Newcomer for Natalie Wood.
