Can you make a drama out of a weekend?

Write, shoot and edit a film in 48hrs!

Take part in our exciting film-making challenge and see your finished short film on the big screen!

Use your mobile phone’s camera (or even professional gear if you’re lucky enough to have it) but remember great story-telling is far more important than picture quality!

At the Film Challenge Start event, each team (a maximum of 6 people) will be given a briefing on the Friday night and assigned a randomly allocated film genre and an object to include in your film (so there’s no cheating!) – then each team will have just 48 hours (until Sunday evening) to make a short film.

That means writing a script, casting your film, finding locations, shooting your short film, editing it and delivering it ready to watch within 2 days by the agreed deadline!

If you make the deadline, your film will be included in our Gala Screening and Awards event at The Regal Cinema, Fordingbridge the following weekend.

The qualifying films will be screened for all team members at The Regal in front of a panel of judges who will present awards to the best films in a number of categories.

The overall winner of ‘Best Film’ will take home a trophy and get the chance to have a free private hire of the Regal to watch a film of their choice with family and friends!

Deadline for entries has been extended to Tuesday 29th July 2025 at 5pm.

To take part or to find out more information, send an email to regalfilmchallenge@gmail.com and you’ll receive an information pack including an application form along with rules and terms & conditions.

There is a modest entry fee (£20) per team to cover admin and award costs. Teams must submit an application form by the deadline (29th July 2025 at 5pm) to secure their place in the competition. There is a limit to the number of teams for logistical reasons, so if you’re thinking of taking part, the advice is to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Remember this is open to all – experienced filmmakers and those who are new to it. We’d love to see some young film-makers too but for safeguarding reasons under 18s must have an adult as part of the team. “It’s a full-on, fun weekend of creativity and hard work as you battle to get your film made by the deadline! We can’t wait to see the finished films on the big screen at The Regal!

Regal Film Challenge 2025- key dates:

The Regal 48hr Film Challenge START Event!

Friday 1st August, 7pm.

Location: The Regal Cinema, 35 Shaftesbury Street, Fordingbridge, SP6 1JF

What3Words location: ///assures.pats.obtain

PARKING: Please park in the Central Car Park in Fordingbridge, a 2-minute walk away.

At least one member of your team (and remember at least 1 representative must be an adult) will need to attend the Challenge Start Event. If you don’t attend the START event you won’t be able to participate in the Film Challenge. Once all teams have been randomly allocated their film genre and notified about the object, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about the challenge and its rules. Remember, if in doubt, ask!

Possible Random Genre Categories:

Drama; Thriller; Horror; ‘Mockumentary’; Fantasy; Romantic; Sci Fi; Comedy/Farce

When everyone is happy and ready to make a film, we’ll start the 48 Hour countdown timer (agreeing the actual deadline time by which all completed films must be submitted on Sunday evening) and you’ll be free to head off and make your films!

The Regal 48hr Film Challenge END

Sunday 3rd August – Approx 7 pm (2025 exact timings TBC at Film Challenge START)

In order to qualify for consideration for any awards and to be shown at the Gala Screening Event, your completed film must be submitted by the challenge end time agreed at the Film Challenge START Event. There are two methods for submitting your films:

Option 1 – physically drop off your films to The Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge on a USB Key Drive (in MP4 format in the highest resolution possible up to 4K) in an envelope with details of your team, your Film Title and a contact number. If nobody is in attendance at The Regal Cinema when you drop off you can use the letter box which is located low down on the left side of the front doors.

Option 2 – you may send a link to your film (in MP4 format in the highest resolution possible) using a service like WeTransfer (https://wetransfer.com/) or a link to your film on DropBox or Google Drive or any other cloud service. The link should be sent to regalfilmchallenge@gmail.com by the agreed deadline (the email time stamp will be used to determine if the film is submitted on time).

NOTE: The restricted timing of this challenge is a key part of the challenge. Anything physically delivered or received electronically after the deadline will not be included in the competition, but may be screened at the Gala event if there is sufficient time.

The Regal 48 Hour Film Challenge Gala Screening and Awards Event

Sunday 10th August in the afternoon (2025 exact timings to be confirmed to teams during the week before as we may need to have multiple screenings to accommodate all team members)

We will contact teams during the week prior to the screening to determine how many people will be attending the screenings. Due to the total number of teams and team members and the limited capacity of the Regal Cinema, it is likely that we may have to have a couple of screenings of all the films. The final screening will be the Gala Screening event with judges in attendance. Each team will be able to have 2 representatives at this Gala screening.

After the screening, the judges will announce the ‘Best Film’ award, the category winners and the winner of the audience award.

There are 5 categories in which to win an award:

Cinematography; Editing; Best Young Film Maker; Best Soundtrack,
Audience Award (voted by all who attend the screenings); Best Film

Each winning team will get an award. The winner of Best Film will also be given a free private screening of their film and a movie of their choice in The Regal Cinema for themselves and their friends (maximum of 30 attendees).
