Wild Strawberries (1957)
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of renowned Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman’s birth The Regal Cinema Foreign Film series presents Wild Strawberries.
Retired, yet distinguished doctor, Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) travels from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his pregnant and unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), in order to receive his honorary degree.
Along the way they encounter a series of hitchhikers, each of whom causes the elderly doctor to muse upon the pleasures and failures of his own life. These include the vivacious young Sara (Bibi Andersson), a dead ringer for the doctor’s own first love.
Wild Strawberries has excellent critic acclaim including from The Guardian and The BBC.
“Critics have found influences in Strindberg and Dickens; I think there is some Shakespeare, too. In Borg, Sjostrom and Bergman created cinema’s domestic, bourgeois, 20th-century answer to Lear” – The Guardian
This film is in Swedish with English subtitles.
