Shoplifters (2018)

The Regal’s Foreign Film series presents the Japanese film Shoplifters.

Shoplifters is an Oscar-nominated film directed, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it went on to win the prestigious Palme d’Or.

A Japanese family living in Tokyo are stuck in part time jobs, barely making enough to get by. To top up their income they have taken to routinely shoplifting goods, using a system of hand signals to communicate

After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across Yuri, a little girl, sat out in the freezing cold.

They are, at first, reluctant to take the girl into their home, however Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the extreme hardships and abuse the little girl has faced. They live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them…
