Maurice (1987)

Maurice is the romantic story based on the novel ‘Maurice’ by E. M. Forster.

It is a tale of gay love in early 20th-century England. The story follows Maurice Hall (James Wilby) through university and a tumultuous relationship with Clive Durham (a young Hugh Grant).

After his lover rejects him, the young man is trapped by the oppressiveness of Edwardian society as he tries to come to terms with, and accept, his sexuality.

Before “Call Me By Your Name” was Maurice; a film that was “undervalued in 1987 and is underseen today” (The Guardian). With it’s beautiful 30th anniversary restoration Maurice is extremely worthy of the big screen.

“Merchant Ivory’s EM Forster adaptation richer than ever” – The Guardian ★★★★★
