Empire of the Sun (1987)

Part of our FILM FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT: Friday 20th – Sunday 29th September 2019.

Empire of the Sun is a moving, coming-of-age war film based on J. G. Ballard’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name.

Directed by Steven Spielberg the film stars a very young Christian Bale alongside John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Nigel Havers. Empire of The Sun features another outstanding soundtrack from renowned American composer John Williams.

Jamie “Jim” Graham (Christian Bale) is a 13 year old British boy, living with his wealthy family in pre-World War II Shanghai.

During the Japanese invasion, Jamie is heartbreakingly separated from his parents and soon finds himself living as a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp – a stark contrast to his privileged pre-war life.

“Christian Bale gives a most remarkable performance as Jim” – The Spectator

“An intriguing combination of Spielberg’s two sides: the earlier childlike, escapist showman and the later, more mature director” – Slant Magazine ★★★★★
